Lost in Translation Vol. 12
The "name that tune" series with a twist. Can you reconstruct the original lyric after translation through half a dozen languages and identify the song?
Lost in Translation is a weekly “name that tune” series with a twist. Every Monday I’ll present a song lyric which has been run through half a dozen languages before back translation into English. The translation process transmogrifies the lyric into something quite unlike the original and the challenge is for you, Dear Reader, to attempt to decipher the lyric and name the tune. Every weekend I’ll publish a new post with the translated lyric along with the original and a YouTube video timestamped to the start of the lyric.
It’s Monday, which can only mean one thing—it’s time for another installment of Lost in Translation! Last week’s song was the Talk Talk track “It’s My Life” from their 1984 album of the same name. In what was a record response time, Steve Goldberg chimed in with the correct answer. I’m not sure whether this week’s selection is a toughie or not; for someone who knows their lyrics, it might be a slam dunk. We’ll see!
We’re staying in the 80s again this week, with a track by a female solo artist that, despite decidedly mixed reviews on its release, managed to achieve worldwide success. While reaching the top ten in half a dozen European countries, the single also saw considerable success in Canada and the US, ultimately moving over a million units globally.

Translated Lyric
Here’s the lyric for this week’s Lost in Translation:
Some men love sex. Some dance slowly
I'm fine
If they don't care
I have to leave them.
Some will play hard, some will lie.
But I won't let you play (under any circumstances)
Only men can make money.
Must have fun on a rainy day.
If nobody’s scored the correct answer by midweek then I’ll be back on Notes with some more clues and on the weekend with the solution.
I have an inkling that someone’s gonna get it this week (and I have a prediction as to who that will be - we’ll see!) Have at it folks!!
Please head to the comments and let me know whether you’ve figured out this week’s song!!
My guess this week is Madonna's "Material Girl"
The truth is, I thought of two Madonna songs, Justify My Love and Material Girl, but I went looking up the lyrics for the former first, and that cost me the win. Goddammit! 😁
