The first appearance from one of my desert island discs, one of my favorite songs of all-time, and an artist that forever changed my life. All that and more on week 20 of Alphabet Soup!
What a great playlist the letter J produced. Aimee Mann is wonderful - I was obsessed with the album she made with Til Tuesday for a while, decades ago.
Oh man, 'Jingo' - what an absolute beast of a song! I have three live bootleg albums of 1968/pre-1st LP Santana and 'Jingo' live is a straight-up mind-blowing gem of a tune. The drums, percussion, Rolie's keys, and of course Carlos' guitar are all incendiary. I can only imagine what the acidhead Grateful Dead/Jefferson Airplane fans must have thought of them.
I did see Santana multiple times in the '80s and '90s and they were great. I will admit that my love for them is more focused on their '68-71 years, however. That era of Santana would definitely be in a dream line-up with a few other bands I would have loved to have seen.
It's also amazing that two of the band's key members went on to form Journey. However, pre-Steve Perry Journey was a different band altogether.
Finally, your vulnerability and willingness to share is also always a nice way to wrap up the post.
Thanks for reading Michael and for your lovely comment. I’m not necessarily a fan of Santana but if I was it would be very much tilted to their earlier work. I would’ve loved to see Santana live, they’re electrifying. Shrieve’s drumming on Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock was just absolutely incredible. That remains one of my favorite live performances by any band ever.

And Sinéad O’Connor. Always.
Thanks Ian. I’ve been meaning to go back and listen to Aimee Mann’s work with ‘Til Tuesday as I only ever knew the monster single.
Thanks for sharing these Mark- Now I have a list of options to listen to and to consider. Hope you're well.
Thanks Thalia, glad you enjoyed them!
Great read, as always. I absolutely love Sade. What a tremendous artist, in all respects!
Thanks Andres! She really is amazing isn’t she? Do you have her work on vinyl?
Yes she is! I have early pressings of Diamond Life and Promise. Many others on my wantlist! Listening to Sade is always an experience

Cheers to you, Mark! 🙏
