There’s quite a mix of Canadian music on this week’s list. Did any catch your fancy? If you’re a fan of Alanis Morissette and haven’t listened to Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, I’d highly recommend giving it a listen!
Definitely. But Universal otherwise has unfortunately neglected their catalogue- I haven't been able to find a more recent compilation or album release (as, for example, has been done with BTO, whose front-man was Trooper's producer).
Inspiring text and beautiful pictures, as always. "That I Would Be Good" has always held a special place in my heart. I remember listening to that song, and the entire album, quite obsessively as a teenager. "Thank U" is another favourite of mine.
I really loved Jagged Little Pill, Supposed Former(...) and Under Rug Swept. Her subsequent records didn't resonate with me as much.
Thanks Andres! The song holds a very special place for me as well, ranking as one of my favorite songs of all time. I’d definitely agree that her first three albums are the best. I did enjoy her 2020 album, ranking it in my top 50. It was certainly nice to hear music from her again.
My 2020 AOTY list is quite an outlier as my selections tended to gravitate towards music that reminded me of more comfortable and secure times in my life. Looking back now it feels like that was driven by an instinctive desire to feel safe in a time of deep uncertainty.
Bif Naked!!! Love her! Somehow I’ve only managed to listen to “I Bificus,” so will have to check out the rest of her catalog.
Huge fan of The Smiths, Alanis Morisette, and The Sisters of Mercy. I haven’t heard of anyone else on this list, so will have to do some listening today.
So few people have even heard of Bif Naked! Her self-titled debut was fantastic, it’s my favorite of hers. If you have a chance to listen to VAST, I think they’re fantastic, particularly the debut Visual Audio Sensory Theater, Nude and April (my favorite).
Will put VAST on my list. And absolutely Bif Naked’s debut. I’m surprised I never looked it up before.
I can’t remember where I heard Moment of Weakness by Bif Naked, maybe Buffy?? LOL it was around that time frame for me, I think. But, I remember listening to that and Spaceman on repeat back in 2001.
My Canadian preferences are clear from my own 'Stack; since you stipulated the past 5-10 years, you won't be subjected to them. 😁 That said, my only previous exposure to Blue Rodeo was their performance with Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee at the Gordon Lightfoot tribute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yE6su7XFYqw From that, I was interested in hearing more of their music, and was happy that you gave me the opportunity today. Very nice. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing that Jackie! I’m not familiar with the song, do you know the track name? One of the commenters wondered why Lightfoot never performed the track in concert but I don’t see the name mentioned anywhere. It certainly feels like an unusual choice for a tribute concert.
Canada had a pretty deep garage, psychedelic, as well as commune hippie folk scene in the late 60s and early 70s. However, those bands and albums are somewhat counterintuitive to the preface of your post, as they were made heavily under the influence of psychedelics and cannabis.
As always, wonderful photos. The very first one with the mountains and ferns makes Ireland look almost like the Pacific NW!
I’m not overly familiar with Canadian music from that era, certainly not the garage and psychedelic genres. I’ve nothing at all against music conceived, created and performed under the influence of anything. The reality is that quite often those substances spur people to creative heights not otherwise attainable.
It’s absolutely gorgeous here, hard to take a bad photo. I’ve never hiked out in the Pacific NW, hoping to get out there someday!
Maybe it's because I'm not Canadian but I don't know any of these songs!

I do like Morrissette but for some reason didn't remember that song. I need to dive into the list a bit more.
I definitely dig Trooper (though my favorite song is a more obscure "Hot Shots" track, "Round Round We Go").
That’s a great song! There’s really not a bad track on that Hot Shots collection

It's "The Way I Feel," from his album of the same name: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEehNZUnsg0
I remember hearing it on my parents' radio station, but never attended to the lyrics.

You can now add the Pacific Crest Trail (Mexico > Canada) to your hiking "To Do" list!
Haha that’s way too intense for me!!
