Well, foist things foist, Mark (I'm afraid I'm channeling my spirit animal, Bugs Bunny, today!)....what an adorable little shanty you've found! Or, as Bugs' pal Daffy, would say, "An imposing pile!" Truly gorgeous, I must say, and worth waiting the x-amount of months for!
I know you've utilized your "Five Faves" before, but this brilliant subject on Stern's musical guests really caught my attention. I know I'm way behind on what he was doing in his (what I'm perceiving as his) heyday. When coupled with "Live From Darryl's House" (which I was far more likely to follow), it's all quite a bit of rare live performances to explore! Great idea, in other words, to plumb the depths of Howard's musical largesse!
Thanks so much Brad! We’re really in love with this house. If it’s meant to be then all will go well. And it’ll be worth the wait.
Howard does have a wealth of in-studio live performances out there to enjoy. I’ve also dipped into Darryl’s House over the years and seen some great performances there as well.
Wow, Mark! Gorgeous house! I take it from your note to my post that everything worked out with it, logistically? Yeah, I suppose those 400 year old houses weren’t designed for routers and wifi — I imagine it can get through blocks of stone okay? :) Is it possible I could be jealous even after just moving into my own new, gorgeous, spacious home? Looks big enough for guests, should I make it out there one day (or to escape a crumbling country).
I grew up listening to Howard Stern. I was a teenage boy so liked his juvenile, sex-obsessed banter/skits. The movie version of his story is surprisingly sweet. He did apologize of sorts for his racist, sexist, shock-jock years, and has become a much better interviewer and empathetic listener. I had seen the Brandi Carlisle video before and it gave me goosebumps. It’s one of my top-3 EJ songs. I’m a huge fan of his first 5 or 6 albums. They are stone-cold classics.
All the performances are riveting. I was never a big Alanis fan, but that version blew me away. I think Miley Cyrus is one of the best interpreters of other people’s music of her generation. I’ve seen dozens of collaborations and covers and there’s a reason the greats are performing and recording with her. She’s the real deal.
The Harry Styles was super fun as well — it’s so clear how talented he is, and good looking and seemingly charming and like Alanis says, “It’s not fair!” I forgot who the 5th one was. I’m sure I loved it too.
Congrats again on the new house and on your Fabulous Five series!
Thanks Steve! We had the house surveyed yesterday and hopefully that won’t raise any concerns. By this time next week, assuming all goes well, we should hopefully be locked in by contract. We have a guest room so you’re welcome to visit if you’re ever in the area!
I certainly have the sense that Stern has mellowed with age. Glad you enjoyed the performances (the fifth was David Gray’s Babylon). Alanis’ rendition of You Oughta Know was phenomenal and I agree with you on Miley - she’s been amazing in covering and reinterpreting other artists’ songs
Funny you should mention/share David Gray, as I saw he just released a new album. I guess he's been putting out music fairly consistently, but this is his first since 2021.
And on a separate note, huge congratulations on the house! Looks beautiful. I look forward to having you on these shores on a more permanent basis! Many many congratulations to you guys ♥️
I really enjoyed this post. I don’t know enough about Howard Stern to form an opinion other than he can seem a bit obnoxious at times but I do appreciate the fact that these artists seem at ease performing in his show, so there’s that.
I particularly enjoyed the performances by Alanis and Harry.
It’s incredible how relaxed and on point she is in this performance. I love her strong command of tempo/rhythm — you can tell she’s not just a singer and songwriter but a multi-instrumentalist first and foremost.
It’s not an easy song to sing, especially sitting down! She did a fantastic job. Not a note was missed. The acoustic setting gives the song a very interesting spin… it makes it even more dramatic. I loved it.
Like you, I didn’t follow One Direction but I am a fan of Harry’s solo work. I really enjoyed what he and his band did here. The track is fantastic as we all know, but I loved seeing how he and his band were really grooving and vibing to the music.
I couldn’t help but notice his quick headphone adjustment at the very beginning when he started singing — he was, or at least he clearly thought he was, slightly off pitch but I think it was just a case of him not hearing himself properly. I loved seeing his quick reflexes there. While the band does a superb job, this is one of those songs where the singer needs to do most of the heavy lifting with the melody. He had little to rely on, melodically speaking, other than his own voice. Vocally he was really strong towards the end. And can we talk about his little dance? 😅 He’s such a cool guy!
Thanks Andy! I thought the Alanis performance was amazing, particularly the seeming ease with which she delivered a flawless vocal while sitting down. She has a real instrument in her voice and I agree with you that the slower acoustic version somehow adds more gravitas and depth to the song.
I love Harry Styles, he seems like such a cool cat. He has an awesome style and fashion sense, is a looker, and a charmer and has that great voice. And the joy that radiated from him in that performance was palpable. I agree with you, I think he couldn’t hear himself on the monitor at the start and nudged the headphone to help with that. The band were having so much fun as well. It’s an excellent performance
Thanks to this performance I’ve gained a whole new layer of respect for Alanis. I was a huge fan of her records (Jagged, Supposed, Under Rug Swept) but from So Called Chaos onwards I didn’t connect as much. Her talent and her skills, though, are undeniable. She makes it sound natural but what she’s doing takes a lot of work.
As for Harry, I completely agree. He is so versatile yet refreshingly authentic. You can feel his energy in everything he does. His debut album in particular is probably the best post-boy band debut ever.

Thanks so much!! After a decade of planning and working towards this, it’s extremely rewarding to see things coming to fruition.
Very well deserved!
