I’m like: late 90s? Female vocalist? Ballad? I mean… I feel like I’m a fraud 😂

I’ve certainly seen the song referred to as a ballad in music press, but it’s definitely not a diva-type ballad.

Also, I’ve been a little more opaque with my hint this week as giving more info would probably make it more obvious to some readers.

Gotcha. Then I think it’s fair to say I probably don’t know it 😂

Hahaha good to know not diva-type because that’s not the direction I’ve been looking

Same! Like female 90s is an area I pride myself on knowing well!!

I hear you. I feel like we might be thinking of a female solo artist but it may well be a female vocalist in a band.

I feel though that while I may know the artist/band in question, and even the song, it is probably not one I have on my radar very often.

Unless the translation is really misleading…

Right… I’m checking Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos lyrics lol, but yes wondering if it’s maybe just a female led band… it could also be a cover of a classic??? lol

If it’s Tori, I’m fucked as I don’t follow her. Sarah a bit more but not closely.

I would naturally gravitate towards Mariah, Whitney, Celine but I suspect it may not be them. Chart success was not “moderate” for these ladies in the late 90s 😂

I tried Lauryn Hill because of the downtempo classic album Mark mentioned but there’s only 3 singles off Miseducation and none seems to match these lyrics…

When I hear US and UK and 90s I immediately think Annie Lennox.

Great thought but this one’s an electronica track, more specifically downtempo

I want to say Morcheeba, but I am so crap at these games that my guess is a stab in the dark simply based on your "downtempo" and "female-voiced" hints.

I used to love the hilarious British music game show "Never Mind the Buzzcocks" (I once saw a live taping and beforehand stood next to Mark Lamaar in the bathroom having an awkward conversation as we were peeing... but I digress); whenever the quiz show got to a question or the guests doing lyrical renditions/impressions, my mind always blanked (even if I was very familiar with the track). Thus, my lack of participation in this… (sorry!).

Downtempo is obviously quite a broad genre. You’re definitely in the ballpark although I’d consider this week’s artist a little less trip hop than Morcheeba

Another total stab in the dark.... Stereolab? If I managed to nail the band, I have no idea on the song, tho. (see, I told you I was crap at this).

Not Stereolab, but a good guess!

Hahaha! Speaking of trip hop, I was absolutely checking dates, singles and lyrics for Portishead thinking it may be Roads

Ah, Roads!! My favorite Portishead track and one of my favorite songs of all time.

The "stone cold downtempo classic" hint is intriguing and makes me think of a couple artists in particular, but I'm drawing a blank!

Not a song I’d actually heard before but a good guess! She’s been hit and miss for me over the years but I liked this song a lot.

Just thinking out loud - this made me immediately think of Sheryl Crow’s “Soak Up the Sun,” but that’s super upbeat lol then I thought about “If it Makes You Happy.”

Going to go think on this one for a bit and check lyrics lol

Not a bad guess but definitely much more upbeat than this week’s track!
